INTRODUCTION

Heatbeat is integrated of an intelligent wireless continuous thermometer and the supporting data analysis platform that connects in-hospital and out-of-hospital temperature testing database, bringing efficiency and quality improvement to hospital pediatric diagnosis and treatment.

CHALLENGES
  • Multiple Monitors & User Roles → The actual user (baby) differs from the monitors (parents & healthcare providers), requiring a system that effectively serves multiple stakeholders.

  • Physical Product Design → The patch must be safe, comfortable, and reliable for continuous infant use while meeting hospital-grade durability and home-use convenience.

  • Collaborating with the tech team to ensure stable, secure, and efficient data transmission, optimizing connectivity across hospital and home environments

Overview
About the project

The problem

It’s difficult for parents and healthcare providers to track a baby’s fever trends and take timely action due to disconnected hospital-home temperature data and intermittent monitoring delay responses.

The solution

An integrated system including continuous temperature monitoring patch and its connected APP+monitoring dashboard that seamlessly connects hospital and home data, providing real-time tracking, early alerts, and actionable insights to ensure faster, more informed interventions.

Context

The Department of Pediatrics of Jiangsu Provincial Hospital has entered into a partnership with our team to collaborate on the development of IOT smart medical devices applicable to pediatric scenarios.

Respiratory diseases are prevalent:
Fever is the most common sympton

Over the past five years, respiratory diseases have been the most common diseases in pediatrics, accounting for 23.34% of all pediatric hospital admissions. .

Seasonal Surge
Pediatric Clinics at Capacity

During peak season, the daily outpatient volume can reach up to 2,000 visits, The clinic is operating at full capacity

Enhance the efficiency and quality of diagnosis and treatment for children's respiratory diseases by improving the temperature monitoring system,

Discover
User research

To discover and give solutions to the real pain points of the doctors and patients’ guardians during the process of diagnosis and treatment, we conduct a user research in Jiangsu province hospital, including the flowing three strategies.

Discover
Key findings
Children need specialized temperature monitors,
Traditional adult devices are not suitable for them.
  • children's limited self-care and cooperation hinder efficient diagnosis and treatment.

  • Children's inability to clearly communicate symptoms necessitates monitoring for accurate diagnosis continuously

  • Continuous fevers are especially harmful to children, demanding prompt action from both parents and doctors.

Group 48096112.png
To reduce illness duration and serious risks, effective home care and doctor-patient communication are essential
  • After discharge, young parents often feel anxious and confused about the causes and management of fever.

  • Caring for a sick child requires long-term attention, which frequently conflicts with the parents' work commitments.

  • Doctors need patients' historical data for making further medical decisions.

Our solution
A continuous temperature monitoring product
  • links hospital and home scenarios

  • Enables doctors to provide better treatment by timely detecting risks

  • Offering health and peace of mind to the patients and their families.

Technical consideration

Prior to detailed product design, we identified relevant technical and compliance risks and challenges that would influence the final design outcomes in the subsequent design process, efforts are needed to face and solve these challenges

Accuracy

Sensor accuracy: ±0.2℃

According to FDA, the accuracy of electronic thermometers is required to have a maximum permissible error of 0.2°C

Battery

3 DAYS + 50% = 4.5 DAYS

The Bluetooth temperature patch must run 3+ days in hospitals, but battery drain over time and future feature demands require a 50% capacity increase to ensure reliability.

Wireless communication

Iteration: Improve comfort and adhesion

Changed the shape to a larger, more rounded and regular shape of the sticker to improve the comfort level.

Widened the distance between the adhesive sticker and the edge of the sensor to avoid probe part to distatch

Iteration: Instructions on product

In addition to the product manual, I have designed a guide on the sticker to make it more intuitive for the user to follow the correct steps when using the product.

Design
Product design

Cute look that appeals to children, along with soft, skin-friendly non-woven stickerA whole product kit includes a thermometer sensor and replaceable battery sticker, the sticker's power can be used for 3 days, and can be replaced when it runs out, there are different patterns of stickers to choose from.

Design
Information flow

Now I designed the physical products, how this product will transfer data to the APP and website, and help care-takers doctors to better understand data and make decisions based on it?

Design
Information architecture

Based on the information flow and product requirements, I designed the information architecture of the two parts of this product: in-hospital web and monitoring app for parents.

Final outputs

Scenario 1: In hospital

Doctor monitor the temperature of patients in the hospital

Monitoring board

Doctors and nurses can see the current real-time temperature of all outpatients and hospitalized patients on the PC and the hospital's big screen, which will be automatically updated, abnormal data will be highlighted and alerted to medical staff via SMS and sound (patients' private information is hidden).

Continuous temperature report

The generated continuous monitoring report is connected to the hospital's health record system, allowing access to the patient's profile and prescription at any time, and providing the ability to record medication administration.

Scenario 2: In hospital

A patient's family remotely monitor the patient's temperature

Data monitoring and analysis

Data is synchronized from both mobile and web ends. Parents can monitor baby's body temperature and medication remotely in real time after joining the patient's monitoring family group, In case of temperature abnormality, all family members will be sent a temperature abnormality reminder message.

Connect the family

All baby's family member can have access to monitoring after join the family group and view the patient's data in real time.

Scenario 2: At home

Communicate with the doctor while recovering  at home

Data synchronization

When the baby leaves hospital, parents can still use the thermometer to monitor baby's temperature in recovery phrase. In-hospital and out-of-hospital synchronization allows parents to consult with doctors and share medication and temperature data, creating a safer observation period for patients’ recovery.
